Pilates Class

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a mind body conditioning exercise program originated by Joseph Pilates. It focuses attention on core postural muscles that help keep the human body balanced and provide support for the spine. In particular, Pilates exercises teach awareness of breath and of alignment of the spine, and strengthen the deep torso and abdominal muscles.

This is achieved through eight main principles; concentration, centring, breathing, isolation, routine, precision, control and flowing movement.

Pilates suits all ages and fitness levels and is particularly beneficial for those with back pain, poor postures, neurological conditions, sports injuries, arthritis, stress related illness and before and after pregnancy.

We offer a range of Pilates classes to suit your goal and requirements.  This ranges from small group mat-based classes to a studio circuit class utilising our specialised large equipment such as the reformers.

New to Pilates with Life Fit Wellness?

To ensure everyone has the best possible start, both to maximise enjoyment and effectiveness, we require you to have an initial 1-to-1 session with one of our Pilates Physiotherapists.  This gives you the opportunity also to discuss any goals or concerns you may have prior to embarking on a class. If YOU HAVE NOT done a Pilates 1-1, please call our reception team on 01324 614044 and they will provide you with information and help you find a suitable date and time.

Please note that we require everyone who is new to Pilates at Life Fit Wellness to attend an initial 1 to 1, even if you have attended Pilates elsewhere. This is to ensure your maximum benefit and safety during the classes.

Is 50 too old to start Pilates?

Age is absolutely not a barrier to starting Pilates – in fact, many of our clients begin Pilates in their 50s, 60s, and beyond. Our physiotherapist-led approach ensures exercises are appropriately modified for each individual’s ability level and health status. The controlled, low-impact nature of Pilates makes it particularly suitable for mature adults looking to improve their strength and mobility.

Our initial one-to-one assessment is particularly valuable for older beginners, as it allows our physiotherapists to understand any existing conditions or concerns.

The small class sizes at our facility ensure you receive proper attention and modifications throughout your session. Many of our older clients report improvements in balance, posture, and everyday mobility after regular Pilates practice.

Is Pilates 3 times a week enough?

Practicing Pilates three times per week provides an excellent foundation for improving strength, flexibility and posture. At Life Fit Wellness, we find this frequency allows adequate recovery time between sessions while maintaining consistent progress.

Many of our clients see noticeable improvements in core strength and posture within 8-12 weeks when maintaining this schedule. For those unable to visit our studio three times weekly, we offer online classes as a supplement to in-person sessions, ensuring you can maintain your practice consistently.

Why is Pilates so expensive?

The cost of Pilates classes reflects several key factors that contribute to their value. At Life Fit Wellness, our pricing structure is based on:

Professional expertise – most of our instructors are qualified physiotherapists with additional Pilates certification, providing a level of knowledge that goes beyond standard fitness instruction. This dual qualification ensures you receive expert guidance for both general fitness and any specific health concerns.

Small class sizes – we maintain a maximum of 10 participants per class, ensuring personalised attention and proper form correction. This limited capacity means each client receives substantial individual guidance during every session.

Specialised equipment – our studio features professional-grade equipment including reformers, which require significant investment and regular maintenance to ensure safe, effective workouts. These machines allow for a broader range of exercises and modifications than mat work alone.

Professional facility – our purpose-built studio includes comprehensive amenities, climate control, and proper spacing between equipment to ensure comfort and safety during your practice.
